Augusta Missouri was the first federally approved American Viticultural area gaining the status on June 20, 1980, eight months before the Napa Valley AVA in Northern California. Augusta also has the oldest vineyards in the United States. German settlers came to Augusta to make wine in the 1800's, they shipped wine from Augusta to Chicago Illinois on the Missouri River. Many homes in Augusta have stone wine cellars.
“Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world and one of the most natural things of the world that has been brought to the greatest perfection, and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing.” - Hemingway
